Land Use and Development
As land becomes increasingly valuable, tension among competing interests—public officials, planners, developers, community advocates, environmentalists, business owners, and residents—grows in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Stakeholders progressively seek more active decision-making roles in transportation investment, retail development, industrial growth, residential construction, agricultural preservation, and environmental protection.
Increased demand for stakeholder participation has stimulated some conflicts, but has also created opportunities when underlying conflicts are managed effectively. CBI’s distinctive resources and techniques help clients find a balance among social, political, economic, environmental, health, and other land use and development concerns.
In partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, CBI has trained thousands of public officials, developers, and mediators in land use dispute resolution. Additionally CBI has conducted numerous stakeholder assessments to help constituents understand the dynamics of land use conflict, the opportunities for joint gain, and the potential for collaborative solutions. CBI offers facilitation and mediation of highly technical and political issues to assist in facility siting, master planning, and project review and approval.
Notably, CBI provides expertise in dealing with the unique challenges of land use and sovereignty related to indigenous peoples. In Canada, CBI helped First Nations resolve property taxation and development disputes. We have also helped Beduoins and the Israeli government negotiate complex, multi-generational land claims. Our understanding of tribal needs, customs, and cultures allows us to build consensus in these delicate contexts.
